The Washington Monument, designed by Robert Mills in 1838, to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington, stands 550 feet high and is the largest masonry structure in the world. Construction was begun in 1848 but was not completed until 1884 because of lack of funds and the Civil War. The difference in the shading of the marble (approx. 150' up) delineates the initial construction from its resumption in 1876.
