The Lincoln Memorial is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States. The building, a symbol of freedom, resembles a classical Greek temple and was designed by architect Henry Beacon. It is surrounded by 36 Doric columns which stand for each state of the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. The state names are inscribed around the perimeter of the memorial above each column. The marble and stone used to build the edifice is from several states. The memorial was dedicated May 30, 1922.
