Ted Drewes Frozen Custard has been a tradition in St. Louis since 1929 and is considered a Route 66 institution. When the weather turns hot, Saint Louisans start to crave Ted Drewes famous frozen custard and especially a “Concrete.†The “Concrete†gets it name because the frozen custard shake is so thick that it is served upside down without spilling a delicious drop. The recipe was developed by Ted’s father in 1929 and is still used today. The unique frozen custard can only be found in Saint Louis. The custard is always vanilla but the toppings are endless.
The most famous Ted Drewes location is on old Route 66 that was nothing more than a three-lane road on the outskirts of town when store was first opened. The building is classic Route 66 style complete with a light-bulb studded arrow above its weathered neon sign and small walk-up windows where the orders are placed. This store has become a treasured landmark in St. Louis and is a not-to-be-missed stop for visitors from around the country.
The main location of Ted Drewes, on Historic Route 66 (Chippewa), is open from February thorough December. The South Grand store is only open during the summer months.
