History of Butterfly House:

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House and Education Center is a glass conservatory where hundreds of free flying butterflies and the process of metamorphosis can be observed. The structure is built in a shape reminiscent of butterfly wings and overlooks a lovely small lake. As many as 60 different species of butterflies from all over the world are in free-flight in this re-creation of a rainforest environment with exotic and flowering tropical plants. The landscaped grounds around the conservatory allow visitors to see native butterflies in their natural environment.

Several years ago, Evelyn Newman, a St. Louis philanthropist, visited a butterfly house in Thailand and other locations around the world. Believing that this would be a wonderful addition to the St. Louis area, she raised private funds to construct the Butterfly House. It opened in September of 1998. The thousands of beautifully colored butterflies in free flight, make this a popular and much loved site for children and adults alike.

The Butterfly House is located in the 200-acre Faust Park and is named for Sophia M. Sachs whose husband played a key role in the early development of the Chesterfield area of St. Louis where the Butterfly House is located. Mrs. Sachs loved to share the beauty and excitement of discovery with children and her generous spirit is honored in the Butterfly House.
